CYCLE TO WORK EXPLAINED

The Cycle to Work Scheme was introduced in 1999 to promote healthier commuting and reduce environmental impact. It allows employers to provide employees with bikes and safety equipment as a tax-free benefit, making it easier and more affordable to cycle to work.

The Cycle to Work Scheme can be managed directly by your employer or through third-party providers. Some of the most popular providers include Cyclescheme, Bike2Work, Green Commute Initiative, Enjoy Benefits, Vivup, Cyclesolutions, Salary Extras, and My Benefits. These providers issue a certificate, which, once approved by your employer, can be used to obtain a bike and safety equipment.

The scheme works by allowing employees to sacrifice part of their salary before tax to cover the cost of the bike and equipment. This reduces the amount of tax and national insurance you pay. The cost is also spread over monthly payments, making it more affordable.

Your employer will determine the maximum value for the bike and the length of the agreement. These limits are typically based on an affordability assessment.
